ASE supports a large number of traceflags that modify server behavior,
yet documentation on even those traceflags intended for customer
use is scattered or nonexistent. This presentation will discuss
how traceflags work in general (and why they don't actually work
as users expect - for instance dbcc traceon is commonly assumed
to be session-specific, but is not), some common problems encountered
using traceflags, and changes in traceflag functionality in 12.4
and 15.1 - in particular the new SET SWITCH command, truly session-specific
traceflags and mnemonic traceflags. The bulk of the presentation
consists of detailed discussions and risk assessments of a number
of flags intended for customer use.
