As your data sets grow your statistics maintenance window gets smaller and smaller and we all know that update statistics can take a very long time to run on those huge tables. This presentation will give tips and techniques to speed up the running of update statistics. It will review what update statistics does, how it does it and some myths and legends about its use. Eric will also demonstrate a number of techniques to help update statistics run faster and in some cases avoid running as often as you do now.

The session will include a discussion of sampling, in detail, along with other tips and tricks that can be used to gather optimizer statistics as quickly as possible.
