"Reconfiguring
for System Administration Tasks"
- Judie Grant, Sybase Education
This Masterclass will look at how to tune command options
and server configuration parameters associated with the bcp
(in) utility and the create index command and to improve your
performance of these standard administrative tasks. The
evening will be split into 3 sections:
Section
1: Review buffer management in data caches - creating named
caches, buffer pools, wash point, and so on. This background
helps to understand the effects of tuning command options and
configuration parameters associated with bulk copying data in
and creating indexes.
Section 2: Specific techniques to improve create index performance
including:
Enable large I/O
* Configure the number of sort buffers
* create index . . . with sorted_data
* Decrease the buffer wash area size
* Use parallel worker processes
Section
3: Ways to improve bcp (in) performance:
* Fast bcp
* bcp options:
-n (native mode)
-b (batch size)
-A (packet size)
* Configure the number of pre-allocated extents
* Increase the buffer wash area size
* Use parallel user connections

"Myths
& Legends of ASE - The Optimizer"
An evolutionary review of changes to the optimizer over the
last few versions and in depth discussion of a number of 'myths
and legends' about the optimizer. "How It Works ? Some
Optimizer Internals - An In Depth Look At The Optimizer Statistics"
A look into the internal workings of the optimizer and the statistics
it uses to estimate the cost of any access. The optimizer's
place in query processing. How it estimates selectivity, how
it reads and uses the statistics to make its decisions, how
it uses memory and in what order things happen while it does
its work. There are several statistical values used by the optimizer.
What do they mean, where do they come from and how do they affect
the optimizer's cost estimates? There will be information on
how to interpret the statistics in order to understand how your
data and indexes are affecting the optimizer. We'll also discuss
a number of optimizer related FAQs |
