PowerDesigner Tips & Tricks for ASE & Rep Server Users

Or, some of the loads of stuff PD does for databases and some of the clever things it does with replication systems

John Coleman, formerly of Mott MacDonald, will present a 90 minute masterclass on the above.

What: Masterclass
Where: Sybase 365, Equitable House, 47 King William Street, EC4R 9AF
Date: Wednesday 16 June
Time: 12:00 - 14:00
Who should attend: Any Development DBA or Rep Server Administrator
Directions: Click here

John will draw from his years of database design experience with Power Designer and concentrate on logical and physical data modelling rather than UML and requirements analysis. The emphasis will be on practical techniques that work well, including generating documentation in Microsoft Word format.

This is not a ‘how to’ presentation on database design, it is intended to show database designers how to get the best from Power Designer as a CASE tool. The logical data modelling part is inherently implementation neutral so it will suit all designers, irrespective of the final target RDBMS (e.g. Sybase, Oracle, Microsoft, MySQL, Postgres etc). John has used PD to design and develop Sybase and Microsoft and MySQL systems, and he will share some experience of that – including customising DBMS resource files to embed version management references in database objects.

Sybase replication system design is supported by Power Designer’s ‘Information Liquidity Model’ (ILM). Mott MacDonald has made extensive use of replication systems and John helped design them. He will demonstrate how PD was used for documentation and compare PD’s RCL generator with older, more ‘manual’, approaches.

During this session you will learn how to;

  • prepare for ASE migrations and upgrades by generating accurate and detailed physical data models of your databases
  • improve system stability by tracking DDL changes through data model deltas
  • boost change management processes by utilising PowerDesigner reports as a change review function

The Art of Tuning an ASE In-Memory Database
Rob Verschoor, Senior Technology Evangelist

While Sybase recently released its new version of ASE with support for "In-Memory Databases", some customers had already learned that memory residency through named caches has an effect on task management within the ASE scheduler. When disk i/o is totally eliminated, DBAs must rethink some of their approaches to tuning ASE for both OLTP and mixed workloads. In addition, SMP contention issues could surface with IMDBs that didn't occur previously. This session discusses the side effects of memory residency and how to keep your servers "humming" for all their users.

Object Relational Mappers: Friend or Foe?

Date: 15 December 2009
Time: 15h00 - 16h00
Venue: Your Desk
Presenters: Glenn Paulley, Director of Engineering

Join the SQL Anywhere experts for a deep dive discussion on Object Relational Mappers.

Object relational mappers (ORMs) such as LINQ, Hibernate, and ActiveRecord bridge the gap between the relational database world, and the object-oriented world. By abstracting the database into "virtual database objects", they let programmers develop in any language and environment that they like without ever writing a line of SQL. It sounds great, but is the ORMs sweet song actually a siren's call? This talk will put ORMs on trial to help us find the

The Future of Data management
Rob Verschoor, Senior Technology Evangelist

For those of us in IT today, Dickens' quote "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" certainly rings true. While all of us dread the reality of doing more with less, data management is, in many ways, undergoing several rapid and seminal shifts - from exploding data volumes to sub-millisecond data access; from grid & cloud computing to the singular view of geographically distributed data centers. It's an exciting time to be involved in Data Management. This session will provide a look into Sybase's unique, yet pragmatic, vision for Data Management in the coming years along with roadmaps for our upcoming ASE and Replication Server releases to meet these needs while making it simpler and easier for you to perform your roles as Developers and DBA's.

Claudia Imhoff, noted BI expert and B-eye Network columnist, will get straight answers from two people who know how to put a column-based architecture into practice—and the significant difference it can make in database performance and scalability.

Scott Smith, Director of Data Warehouse Operations with ComScore, Inc., depends on this technology to deliver industry-unique measurement of Internet usage, such as online surfing and buying behavior and preferences.

Irfan Khan, VP and CTO with Sybase, the leader in the column-based database market, has a deep understanding of the technology advantages and knows firsthand why more and more companies like ComScore are adopting a column-based solution.

Attend this session with the experts and learn:

* How column-based technology is optimized for fast reporting and decision    support
* What you should know about evaluating various column-based solutions
* Why traditional row-oriented databases that excel at transaction    processing aren’t optimized for analytics and reporting

Data Management Trends 2008: Challenges - Opportunities

Date: Thursday 3rd April 2008
Time: Morning
Venue: Founders' Hall, London
Presenters: See below

The enterprise data explosion is a fact of life.

A University of California study suggests that 1.5 billion terabytes of new information are created each year, and the lowest estimates translate this into a 30 percent annual growth in new stored data for each business.
Causes abound. One obvious factor is ever-expanding use of the Internet and internal networks, which share information by duplicating it. Another major contributor is financial transparency legislation that require organizations to report on multiple years of data. In nearly every industry, CRM and other customized marketing efforts generate volumes of purchasing-history and personal data.

The explosion of stored data is accompanied by business intelligence trends that examine longer-term data and require that data to be stored online, not off of tapes.

As a result, enterprises face three critical data management challenges:

1. Control costs and improve performance as data volume escalates.
2. Reduce operational risk in the face of growing complexity.
3. Exploit today's technology while laying a strong foundation for the future.

AGENDA

09:00 Data Management Trends 2008 - Opportunities & Challenges
Philip Howard, Research Director, Bloor Research

The task of managing data is changing with the growing volume of information, demands for tighter regulation, greater dependence on information systems, and the limits of today's data centers and IT budgets. IT managers are facing significant challenges, but opportunities exist for those with the insight necessary to find their way through.

10:15 Sybase - A Tradition of Data Innovation
David Jonker, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Sybase Inc.

Addressing the data management needs of 2008 and beyond requires enterprises to move away from the traditional approach of managing data and to embrace a strategy of best-in-class data management. Discover how Sybase has spent the last decade building a portfolio of databases optimized for specific uses and environments.

10:45 Refreshment Break

11:00 Solving Data Center Challenges with "Less is More" Thinking
Peter Thawley, Senior Director/Architect, Sybase Inc.

Many of today's IT departments face a dilemma. Business groups are demanding ever higher service levels, which often requires hardware and data center expansion. At the same time, IT departments are reaching the limits of physical space and stretched IT budgets. Discover how enterprises are doing "more with less" by using the right database technologies for OLTP systems.

11:30 Building an IT Safe for your Information Jewels
         Jeff Pryslak, Senior Solutions Manager

Losing data can be costly, interrupting operations, tarnishing reputations, and even litigation. Recent events reveal the many different ways data can be lost, including hackers, natural and IT disasters, and even rogue employees. Learn how enterprises can protect the enterprise's information jewels while minimizing the impact on system performance.
12:00 Ensuring non-stop operation in a stop and go world
David Jonker, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Sybase Inc.
IT systems are the information pulse of enterprises and the impact of downtime can be enormous for the business groups depending on them. Yet 100% uptime of any one server is never a reality. Systems go and eventually systems stop. However, enterprises that architect for a stop and go world can ensure there is always an information pulse.
