Sybase ASE Anti-Patterns

Weds 14th July 2021

5pm (90 mins)

Joe Woodhouse

Design patterns are generalised solutions to recurring problems, intended to be the results of lessons learned and to stop us reinventing the wheel each time. They're how we're supposed to code and to use IT infrastructure. There are also anti-patterns which as the name suggests are the opposite: undesirable approaches to problems, often the result of "learned mistakes" where we inherit or are taught a poor practice which we re-use without ever really thinking about it.
This presentation will discuss common anti-patterns in Sybase ASE at every level: hardware, OS, storage, ASE architecture, database layout, data model, and SQL code. This blends the approaches of performance & tuning, DevOps, and SRE (Site Reliability Engineering).

ASE Temdb Masterclass

Wednesday 29th July 2020

Tempdb is part of every ASE and it's not unusual for it to be the busiest database. Tempdb performance is therefore often the bottleneck for your overall ASE performance. Featured at various Sybase conferences since 2011, this presentation has finally been brought up to date for ASE 16.0 SP03 PL08 HF1 and is the definitive reference of literally everything you can do to make tempdb faster. Nothing is out of bounds and everything is considered, from rewriting your queries to buying better hardware to dozens of ASE features which are clearly grouped by each release level. If you can think of a tempdb-specific performance & tuning measure not presented here you will win a small prize from the presenter!

ASE Memscale Masterclass

Wednesday 29th April 2020

This case study presents findings from real benchmarking done at an end user site. This client firstly wanted an independent assessment of the true benefit of RHEL HugePages, and secondly the ASE 16 MemScale features. We discuss the business issues that these features are designed to address, the technology issues involved. Attending this session will equip you to perform similar benchmarking at your site, and to clearly understand if these are features you should be looking into - and make the business case for them. This was presented at UK TechSelect 2018 and has been revised and brought up to date for ASE 16.0 SP03 PL08 HF1 as well as features expected in ASE 16.0 SP04 and ASE 16.1.
